Of course we'll still be letting people know the of the various stores that ARE still supporting the atrocities of the fur industry and trying to educate them as to how the majority of the fur found in mainstream retail clothing stores originates from rabbits raised and killed in horrific conditions in Asian countries, mainly China, where are essentially O standards of animal welfare. The fur industry appears to be trying hard to dye this fur to actually make it appear 'faux' and to use it as trim on accessories from boots to gloves which often results in consumers not being aware that they are actually buying the products of immense suffering. We will have 2 stylish (fully clothed!) 'Bunny Girls" on hand hopefully with a male escort in a Santa hat (so far I'm still looking for "cute guy" volunteer though so if you know of any, please e-mail me at ottawa.animal.advocates at rogers.com ) or for any other information... The rally (the only official one scheduled for OAA for this fall/winter season) will be held> MONDAY DECEMBER 5TH @ 12 NOON ***Please note that time was chosen because it is the only time we really have a chance to get media out- in time for 6 o'clock news etc. LOCATION> Lower Rideau Street entrance to the Rideau Centre (In between Shoppers Drug Mart and the Elephant Castle). PLEASE NOTE THAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BE READY TO STAND BACK FROM THE SIDEWALK AND MALL ENTRANCE DOORS in order to avoid blocking pedestrians and shoppers as it is a VERY busy location! The media time is set for 12:30pm so even if you can only make it out for the half hour it would really help the animals/cause! Please also note that all signs and leaflets designed especially for this protest will be provided. You need only bring yourself and any other caring people you know!! For this reason, we also actively support and encourage the adoption of Western fur farming practices on Chinese fur farms." Ruse accusation But pro-fur campaigner Richard D North says a European ban is heavy handed. "This is a ruse by campaigners to attack the legitimate fur trade. Nobody has ever found a large amount of cat and dog fur in the UK. "The European fur industry would never use it. Why bother, when there are lovely skins from properly farmed animals?" Euro MP Struan Stevenson has an array of cat and dog products in his Brussels office - including a coat made from Alsatian skin, a pelt made from four golden retrievers and a blanket made from around 70 cats. All were bought in Europe. "It's cheaper to make these things from cat and dog than it is to make synthetic fur," he told the BBC. "It really is time for this trade to be banned and the EU border to be sealed against it. And the new trade commissioner is more than sympathetic." Markos Kyprianou, EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, is responsible for this area of EU law. His spokesman, Phillip Todd, told the BBC: "As a human being, the commissioner abhors this trade and is very supportive of there being a ban.
