From edenbak at hotmail.com Sun Apr 2 22:09:01 2006 From: edenbak at hotmail.com (Kyle den Bak) Date: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 18:09:01 -0400 Subject: [4animals] A letter sent to Aramark Message-ID: Here is a hastily written letter I wrote to Aramark, the company that provides Carleton's food services. It was hastily written, but I think I employed the requisite amount of corporate ass-kissing to at least earn a reply. If things turn out badly, I will need some support to organize a campaign against Aramark (I mean business baby!). So let me know if your in. Cheers, Kyle To Whom It May Concern: As a student at Carleton University, I would like to begin by congratulating you on making vegetarian and vegan options readily available for students living in residence. The "Vegan Bar" provides a valuable service for those living on campus for those who wish to pursue a cruelty free lifestyle. With this service, Aramark has shown itself to be a corporation concerned with meeting the demands of its clientele. Because of this, I do not hesitate to ask whether your eggs are attained from sources that employ the use battery cages or other inhumane farming practices? If not, I must congratulate you again on the progressive nature of your corporation. If so, you should know that a decision to move to cage free-eggs could make a difference in the treatment of thousands of layer hens. For every single egg produced in a factory egg farm, a layer hen must spend 25 hours in a cage so small it cannot even spread its wings. These hens rarely receive enough food or water and often dye of dehydration. Sadly, these are among the smallest cruelties associated with these farming practices. If you consider the amount of eggs used every day at a typical university, the difference you could make by using cruelty-free eggs is astronomical. This is an issue students care about. There is a burgeoning concern for animal rights and welfare on campus, and it would make many students breathe a sigh of relief to know that Aramark, one of the only providers of food on Campus, is a humane option. I hope Aramark will join Carleton students in our effort to eliminate animal cruelty. I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Kyle den Bak Concerned Carleton Student -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <018801c65798$667e3330$6500a8c0@v> Did you know that the polar bear's Arctic habitat is literally melting away beneath them due to global warming? The only way we can ensure a future for the polar bears is by protecting them under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Please join me in urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect polar bears from extinction by listing them under the ESA! Just click the link below. http://ga3.org/campaign/polar_bears The best available scientific information shows that polar bears are in growing jeopardy as the thick multi-year ice essential to polar bears has been shrinking 8 to 10 percent per decade, and already, an area of sea ice roughly equal to twice the size of Texas has melted away. Some studies forecast an ice-free Arctic in summer as early as 2050, spelling certain doom for polar bears. Listing under the United States Endangered Species Act -- America's safety net for plants and animals on the brink of extinction -- will provide broad protection to polar bears. This listing would require that U.S. agencies not jeopardize their continued existence in any way or harm their critical habitat. Please join me in urging officials in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list polar bears under the ESA before it?s too late! Cathy Kangas, CEO and founder of PRAI Beauty, issued a statement Tuesday saying she had written Prime Minister Stephen Harper to outline her offer. "Stephen Harper says . . . it's what the people of Newfoundland are surviving on,'' she said in a telephone interview from Florida. "They need the $16 million they get from selling seal pelts. "Why can't we pay for the seal hunt and stop it ... One would think that Stephen Harper would welcome an economic solution to the seal hunt.'' Kangas said the money would be raised by private citizens and animal protection groups worldwide, though she did not offer details. The businesswoman is a member of the International Fund for Animal Welfare and an adviser to the Humane Society of the United States. Both organizations are opposed to the seal hunt. In recent years, the hunt has brought in between $15 million and $20 million annually for hunters in Newfoundland, Quebec and the Maritimes. Steven Outhouse, spokesman for Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn, said the federal government would not be taking Kangas up on her offer. "Besides the fact that most within the industry say it's worth more than $16 million ... and notwithstanding the fact that this is an annual income, I don't know whether she was planning to offer $16 million a year for the next decade or if this was a one-time deal or what have you,'' he said. "It's our position that this is a legal, regulated hunt. ... From our perspective, it is a sustainable use of a resource and that's where we stand.'' Meanwhile, Kangas said she'd like to come to Canada in a few weeks to meet with hunters involved in the annual slaughter. She believes they've been misled by Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams, who recently defended the centuries-old hunt during a televised debate with former Beatle and animal rights activist Paul McCartney. "I'd like to meet the fishermen and say, `I know you believe your politicians and Danny Williams but what they're telling you is just not true,''' she said. "We want to say, `Here we are. Here's a paycheque. Join the other side.''' Kangas is also offering to work with the Canadian government to institute a buy-back program for existing hunting licenses and launch a program to promote eco-tourism -- suggestions made by McCartney when he visited the ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence last month. The hunt in the southern gulf ended last week when hunters took just under 20,000 animals. The second phase of the hunt, in the northern Gulf, starts later this week. The catch limit there is about 70,000 seals. The largest hunt starts April 12 off northeastern Newfoundland, an area know as the Front. That hunt is expected to land about 230,000 animals -- the vast majority of them harp seals. This year's hunt has drawn criticism from high-profile celebrities like McCartney, Brigitte Bardot and Pamela Anderson. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I also have a jail costume that goes with it so the bird could be consider a 'KFC fugitive' or or 'jailbird'. I personally think that there is value in being very serious as I agree it is a serious matter, but the costume could be helpful in drawing attention and used perhaps somehow if a media release was to be considered. Having a costume could also be interpreted as the people holding the protest being serious enough about the issue to get a hold of an eye-catching prop so I think there are two ways of looking at a costume ..The character could also wear a more serious sign like 'Birds are not laughing' or something as one of many ideas that could go 'with' a costume..Also, I agree that the 22nd is not the greatest choice for a date since reps from three local AR related groups will be participating in the Glebe eco-fair. So the signs/costume(s) are available and we're happy to collaborate with whoever is organizing.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Animal rights campaigners called for a boycott of the cosmetics chain after Body Shop founder Anita Roddick agreed to sell the company to the French firm for ?652.3m (?940m). Following the announcement last month, green campaigner Roddick rejected criticism that Body Shop was getting into bed with ?the enemy? because L?Oreal has not abandoned animal testing. She said the sale was a chance to strike a fairer deal for the world?s poor as L?Oreal wanted Body Shop to teach it about community trade. However, a BrandIndex rating measured by YouGov, shows that Body Shop?s ?buzz? rating and ?satisfaction? scores have dropped significantly. According to the daily BrandIndex, Body Shop?s ?buzz? rating has dropped 10 points to -4 since the beginning of March, the public?s ?general impression? of it is down three to 19 and ?satisfaction? has slumped 11 points to 14. The deal with L?Oreal has also angered campaigners because it is 26.4% owned by Nestle, one of the most boycotted companies in the world. Mike Brady, co-ordinator at Baby Milk Action, which campaigns against Nestle?s marketing of baby foods and powdered baby milk in the developing world said: ?This brand has been damaged, perhaps terminally, by linking to the world?s ?least responsible company?. ?As people abandon Body Shop for companies with higher ?ethical scores? rather than put money in Nestle?s coffers, it is ethical business, their suppliers and employees who are the winners, as well as infants.? Roddick borrowed ?3,000 (?4,300) from friend Iain McGlinn to set up the first store in Brighton in England 30 years ago. Body Shop now has 2,000 stores in 54 countries. Roddick and her husband Gordon will bank around ?117.4m (?169.1m) from their 18% stake following the sale. YouGov?s BrandIndex is a daily measure of public perception of more than 1,100 consumer brands across 32 sectors, taken from 2,000 interviews. Body Shop declined to comment on sales. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I thought about concentrating on Kayla's for now, and pushing mine back to a later date. I'm all for organizing another one, but I think we should be sure not to divide the forces too much, and make sure we get Kayla all the support we can get for her protest. In any case, I think we should get together with some like minded people very soon and decide what we can do to make the demonstrations effective and bring about a large turnout. Hi- The Red Lobster protest from last year was organized by an individual who I have lost contact with so no-I do not have any signs but I understand Harpseals.org is more than happy to send out materials to any volunteer organizer. I'm really glad to see other people taking initiatives here and maybe even co-ordinate a Red Lobster protest. My only concerns which may not be real concerns...just my perception maybe...is that people are FED up with hearing about seal hunt protesters...I was surprised to hear the comment about people becoming more anti-hunt this year. I guess these weren't the people reading the Ottawa Citizen with each report/editorial containing misleading lies and ridiculing of protesters. Did others catch that disgusting comment by Jan Arden at the Junos about her brassiere being made of seal eyelid?..to which the entire Halifax audience cheered loudly (oddly enough Halifax residents had previously just voted more opposed to the hunt than in favour of in their local newspaper) Also, in case anyone hasn't heard- the Canadian coast guard recently arrested a team of HSUS observers and confiscated their tapes. Plus the govt just announced a new 'initiative' of some sort to encourage aboriginals to become involved...to further promote the misconception about aboriginals and the hunt. If there's any good stuff I don't know please feel free to let me in! In the mean time, I think that the only way a RL protest could work is if maybe we somehow try to incorporate the idea of the 'Number 5'! or in other words....the fact that the seal hunt represents no more than 5% of a sealers income. I am sooooo extremely sick of hearing government and media lies that the hunt is the sealers entire livelihood and that their families would all die etc. if they didn't kill seals. I really feel this is the number one lie related to the seal hunt that is keeping people pro-hunt.. Maybe we could have some girls and guys wearing 'number 5s' and not too much else?....Also I feel we must get some media to make it worthwhile and so some very attention grabbing props would have to come in. Lastly, I'll mention that the action last year was regrettably not very successful because we were not able to acess any customers without walking off the sidewalk on St. Laurent right onto the property of RL. So the leafletting lasted all but 10 minutes and after that our only audience was cars quickly driving by (please note that the closest sidewalk by the Merivale Red Lobster is even farther from the restaurant) Anyways, I would personally advise a MEDIA event with media oriented props....unfortunately what sells as far as media interest in protests is, in a nutshell- scantilly clad people, confrontation, extremism, arrests...sad but true as I've learned from 3.5 years from doing media events! Occasionally we've been lucky and a smaller paper has picked up a lighter themed protest. Anyways, that's my two cents..I was also serious about the dancing number 5s! Last year, it seemed that no one knew about it. Since I do not tend to take in much mainstream media, I really have no idea what the official "buzz" is. However, I guess this is just one more example of why I do not trust mainstream media. I'm sure the Ottawa Citizen is just reflecting its own biases rather than holding up mirror to people's actual feelings. Almost everyone I have spoken to, while perhaps a little misinformed (likely due to mainstream propaganda), seems to be sympathetic once they learn the nature of the hunt. I would hesitate to trust anything the Ottawa Citizen has to say regarding the way people feel. News media should be descriptive rather than prescriptive. Yet I feel the Citizen is telling people how they "should" feel rather than reporting how we do feel. I think this is almost all the more reason to get out there and let people know what is actually going on. Even if it is true that people are fed up with protesters, this is okay. Resistance is a normal step in the process of acceptance. In fact, its once step further than ignorance. When ignorant, people are docile because they do not perceive they ways in which their ordinary lives contribute to something they cannot fundamentally agree with. When people do learn that there is something wrong with the way they live, they resist because they fear change, and they don't want to think they are doing anything wrong. Cognitive dissidence is normal, but it is a sign that we as activists have started to make a difference. If we have jumped the hurdle of ignorance that is all the more reason stick to our guns and bear out the stage of resistance. I know vegetarians and vegans, including myself, that went through stages of hostility and resistance. It is normal for the human mind to invent any reason to justify one's current state of living or complicity. No one wants to think that they play a part in promoting, or allowing cruelty. Peter Singer wrote, "It is easy for us to criticize the prejudices of our grandfathers, from which our fathers freed themselves. It is more difficult to distance ourselves from our own views so that we can dispassionately search for the prejudices among the beliefs and values we hold." While I somewhat support the idea of representing the number five for its immediate utility, I resent that the only arguments that seem to make sense to people are economic. I will note here that Atlantic slave trade was supported on economic grounds, but never in a million years could an economic argument truly justify a moral decision. It is a sad day when all decisions must be filtered through economic lenses. I know this is how society works, and that economic arguments are the main support of the seal hunt - yet I cannot help but feel dirty employing the same logic. I don't think we can make lasting change until people realize that there is more to life than making money through whatever means possible. Suppose someone were to find a more profitable way to conduct the seal slaughter so that perhaps 20% of the income of fishermen could be supplemented by this practice? Would we then be forced to concede that the hunt is okay? As people who care about the actual well being of animals regardless of their benefit to human desires, our answer must be NO. If the closest comparison to societies use for animals is, in fact, slavery, then I will point out that the abolition movement started in Britain, even as Britain dominated the slave trade economically. In fact, Britain's move to abolish the slave trade was, proportionately the most costly humanitarian endeavor in recorded history. If the abolitionists were to have based their arguments on economic grounds, there would have been no justification to abolish the trade. I, therefore, suggest if we are going to focus on economic arguments, we do it in such a way that shows the inadequacy of economic arguments in decisions of morality. It needs to be shown that the hunt is wrong regardless of the economic utility that is currently used to justify our widespread use and abuse of both human and nonhuman animals. Myself I have been following the media's response to the seal hunt protests by McCartney, Brigitte Bardot, Pamela Anderson and in general and it was not hard to become angry about the countless untruths being printed and reported such as how sealing is a livelihood for Newfoundlanders. While it would be nice to think that people can think for themselves, my concern was that with almost all of the media sources I encountered, there was almost nil reported as to the anti-sealing argument. So for people who were in the dark about the hunt there was not much else to consider than the lies and outlashing against the supposedly incorrect arguments of protesters. I am currently undecided as to how much corruption is at work within the media regarding the seal hunt but I know that the media is still the only way to reach the amount of people that I think would be necessary to contend with the entire Canadian government. I agree that it is very sad that decisions in the Western world almost always seem based on economics but to fight this 'principal' of maintaining the current standard of living through economic decisions (at whatever cost) could be considered 'another' battle on top of the immediate battle to stop animal sufferring which could make things even harder for ourselves. However, if we focus only on economic counter arguments, I agree about the 20% point eg. if someone devised a way to make the hunt more profitable than 5% it could defeat the cause. My concern about using a slavery type of argument is that based on my experiences and people's reactions that I have read about, it seems very difficult for many people to think along these lines. I like to think that enlightening people as a 'beginning' or as planting some kind of seed is a possiblity for some AR issues like ve*ganism or factory farming but it just seems to me that people are not able to do anything more with this 'slavery' comparision than flat out reject it because they are not able to think about it any further, for whatever reason. (Have others encountered people who have been sympathetic to a comparison of human and animal slavery?) Perhaps, in order to effectively expose the truth behind the seal hunt or any AR cause, we need to try to get inside THEIR heads and use a way that is both appropriate to our cause and which they CAN COMPREHEND and see the truth behind... The 5% signs I think could do it but I agree now that it might not be the best strategy.. As far as letting people know what's going on, I was just pointing out that the physical location of where we would be able to legally protest is not close to the entrances of either Red Lobster location. At the last protest at the St. Laurent Blvd location, after we were asked to stay off the property an activist attempted to run over the lawn to customers going into Red Lobster to pass out leaflets but this really was not very efffective. Also, pedestrians don't really walk along the sidewalks of St.Laurent Blvd or Merivale Road to get to the restaurants as is the case with the Glebe KFC. One more comment about the media....despite my own mis-trust of them they are still the difference between a bunch of people receiving leaflets and a hundred thousand or more people learning something via the t.v or newspapers and I really feel that it should be a goal to at least try to get coverage. If we could come up with an idea that is interesting to people and the media and also appeals to their sympathy, I think we could make a difference. So if we really want to pursue this in an effective manner, I think we need a really good strategy. I would be willing to do or help with a media release and possibly co/co-ordinate an action if we can find one! As a final thought, perhaps the protest would not 'have' to take place at a Red Lobster if there is interest in also reaching people on the street/sidewalk. Harpseals.org seems to indicate that any seafood restaurant could be a good location. If media did cover the protest, it would not matter as much how many pedestrians we reached. On the other hand, if they media didn't come out it would be good to have reached at least a hundred or more pedestrians. There are various seafood restaurants in the Byward Market.. ----- Original Message ----- From: Kyle den Bak To: vaalea Cc: Abbott Tracey ; Michele ; Jane Kearnan ; Kayla ; Noah Soroka ; Diana Payne ; Simon Chan ; 4animals at ottawaveg.com ; Frank Sent: Tuesday, April 18, 2006 10:15 AM Subject: Re: [4animals] KFC Demo Update When I spoke of people becoming more "anti-hunt" this year, I was basing my perception on the number of people I have encountered that now seem to know about the hunt and deplore it. Sorry for the lengthy post, Kyle On 18-Apr-06, at 12:39 AM, vaalea wrote: Forwarding a message from Victoria.... If we officially are planning to start at 12PM, we should all be there by 11:30AM to get set up. Then if (and hopefully when) the media show up, we will be well underway. I am proposing that the main group of us get together 2-3 weeks beforehand to make sure we haven't forgotten anything important, and just to run through how everything is expected to go. Is is possible for people to meet either Sunday May 7th (sometime after noon), or Saturday May 13th (pretty much any time)? Let me know ASAP. Just a quick check, is there anyone who knows the exact address of the Glebe location so that I can get some posters printed off? This week and the next are very busy for me. I am helping my girlfriend move, and I have visitors from out of town. I will start placing the posters late next week. I guess it would be a majority vote unless there is still an official organizer (I'm still not clear on that) it sounds more like a communal effort at this point. I kind of think that unless we have a chicken arrested for KFC, outreach might be better as KFC is kind of 'old news' for media (been in the news for years) I have gotten a clear impression over the years that 'most' media esp the biggest sources just don't care about AR the way we do...what they want is an 'exciting story' but if people want to try for media with us and signs.. STAPLES now offers a new service where they can take a photo/image and blow up it many times the original size to make it quite big and relatively clear for about 37$. If we had someone or the 'chicken' crossing the road at the Glebe KFC holding this up to traffic as opposed to a black and white sign I think this could be more effective. If interested people met up at a central location like WILD OAT and each brought 5$ we could get at least one done up maybe even two.. We could bring images of chickens and decide which one is the best.. These signs could also be re-used within the different groups for different events like Loblaws if the (or one of the images) showed a battery cage. I remember an activist mentionning something about a projector screen. I think this would be fanstastic if someone has lots of extra cash (I don't!) as it would likely require a generator...otherwise maybe this could be considered a longer term goal with maybe a fundraiser involved. I was ready to go with a vegan/vegetarian potluck last summer before complications prevented it from happening so perhaps we could talk about that at a meeting too.. Also, I have a sign with the header 'KICK THE BUCKET' that I thought of/ did up in coloured markers with a picture of a bucket with dead chicken pieces shaped like thighs, wings etc in it all labeled 'cruelty'....we could maybe agree on a design and artistic people could each do up a few to spread out the work. Or we could just stick to the peta black and white signs. (I personally prefer signs with an image and wording combination..) There are many possibilities but I think the main goal should always be to try to do things in a way that would appeal to the average person because they're the ones who need convincing!
