Would you be willing to post this in the 4animals and vegchat email groups? Victoria (from OAA) and I just wanted to remind people. Hope to see you there! Take Care. Meredith Hey guys! Hope you have all been having a fantastic summer. As some of you may know, the Shrine Circus is coming to town. The Shrine circus uses live animals in their acts which is unacceptable. It is completely unnecessary when circuses like Cirque du Soleil are so successful without the exploitation of animals. Ottawa Animal Advocates and Carleton University's Animal Rights Working group have organized a demonstration to educate circus goers about the miseries these animals face every day. Shrine Circus Media Event/Demonstration with live street theatre! August 10th, 6-7.30pm. St. Laurent Shopping Mall-Parking Lot) (sidewalk closest to the big main tent, sorry for the vagueness, we're having trouble naming an EXACT location) Bring your friends! Animals weren't made for our entertainment. They spend the majority of every day confined to a small cage in shackles and are forced to perform ridiculous acts under threat of physical punishment, including whips and bullhooks. They eat, sleep, urinate and defecate in the same small cages and are only exercised for a few minutes each day within the confines of their routine. There are no laws in place to protect the plight of circus animals in Canada and the Shrine Circus avoids inspections and regulations by not owning any of the animals in their acts. Instead, they rent from other circuses, allowing the animals to suffer with care that is far below standard. Shrine Circuses have been found to offer little veterinary care, little access to nutritious food and clean water and inadequate housing as well as documented cases of abuse and mishandling. Shrine Circuses will not allow any outsiders to see the living conditions of the animals or how they are transported. We encourage circuses to follow the path of Canada's own Cirque du Soleil and remove their animal acts from their show! http://www.animalrightscanada.com/entertainment/Circus-faq.asp http://www.canada.com/windsorstar/story.html?id=7cc3c221-dbd0-4f07-ba91-ec6336baabe8&k=85034 http://circuses.com/circuses.asp See you there! Hope you have all been having a good summer. As some of you may know, the Shrine Circus is coming to town. The Shrine circus uses live animals in their acts which is unacceptable. It is completely unnecessary when circuses like Cirque du Soleil are so successful without the exploitation of animals. Ottawa Animal Advocates and Carleton University's Animal Rights Working group have organized a demonstration to educate circus goers about the miseries these animals face every day and to hopefully gain some media representation of this cruel form of animal abuse. A Shrine Circus protest with live street theatre will take place>>> *** Thursday August 10th *** from 6:15pm-7.30pm on the sidewalk by the St. Laurent shopping mall parking lot (St. Laurent Boulevard near Ogilvie Road) near the circus tent. We're still trying to establish an 'exact' location because the circus has never been held in this parking lot before...but street theatre performers> a baby 'elephant' and an angry 'Shriner' will be on site near the circus tent and hard to miss! We will also attempt to post one more notice if we end up being able to obtain an exact location from the mall. Otherwise you shouldn't have any trouble spotting the activist performers. We only have a minimal number of definate confirmations of people planning to attend so we and of course the abused animals could really use your participation for the hour. Please note that the protest will go ahead even if it looks like rain....We hope that people will make the effort to come out and if it is raining at 6:15pm we will evaluate the situation. We do have plastic covers for signs and bad weather actually contributed to media coming out to cover us at Ringling Brothers circus two years ago! Please also note that donations would be greatly appreciated if possible as the cost of costumes and other props for this demo is expected to average around 80$. All signs and literature will be provided. Please just bring yourself and others you know who may also care about the sad situation of exotic animals used for human entertainment. The animals need all the support we can give them. See you there! The plan would be to have a team of 2 people standing at the large (completely safe and raised) median where cars stop while waiting to turn left into the parking lot, one person dressed in the jailed elephant costume and holding graphic photos of elephants and the other giving out leaflets to people in stopped cars. At the protest yesterday we had NO issues with being asked to move even though we did not actually have a permit for the median. Even 'if' a pair was asked to leave there is no law against crossing the road when we could still hand out leaflets quickly and at least show the pictures and the jailed (crying) elephant to many people. (With this mall location there were virtually no pedestrians walking to the circus because there was so much parking at the mall...perhaps a reason to move the circus from the old location on behalf of the Shriners....?) There is also tons of parking behind PERKINS' restaurant which is right in front of the median for people who drive. This also indicates the place closest to this median- PERKINS is right at the corner of St. Laurent and Ogilvie Road. Anyways, we'd be looking for people for the following times> Sat 11am-12noon or Sat 3pm-4pm or Sat 6:30pm-7:30pm Sun 12noon-1pm. If you want to help by wearing the colourful costume or passing out leaflets PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP which hour and day you're interested in and I can bring the materials to you...or I plan to volunteer for one of the time slots anyways. The report on the Thursday protest with photos will be coming soon. Thanks! Victoria -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You'll also find campaign updates and a section on what local activists are doing. I want to personally thank this issue's contributors who have taken time out of their busy schedules to write or review articles or who have allowed us to reprint articles from their web sites. Please forward a copy to anyone working on the seal campaign or who is interested in ending the commercial seal hunt. I don't know why I wait til the last minute to forward these... if you read your email in the AM you can send out the "sign-on letter" email before they address it in the meeting. ----- Original Message ----- From: Christine Sent: Tuesday, August 22, 2006 12:29 PM Subject: [wildlifeontario] An Update on the Royal Swan Controversy Dear Royal Swan Supporter, The efforts of each of you who took the time to send emails to the Mayor and Councillors, protesting the dreadful conditions that Ottawa's Royal Swans have been forced to endure, is paying off! We believe we need just one more push to make this a happy ending for the Swans. If you haven't sent the sign-on letter below, please do so now and have friends send one as well. We ask, if at all possible, that you attend the City Council meeting this Wednesday, August 23rd to reinforce the message to councillors that this is an issue of concern to the community. The meeting starts at 1:00 p.m. but we suggest you not come until 2:00 p.m. as that is the earliest time likely for the swan issue to be discussed. If you plan to attend please let us know by replying to this email. Councillor Rick Chiarelli will be making a Motion for the Royal Swans living conditions to be immediately improved and for assurance that the swans be released next spring, as has been the practice in the past, or be transferred to a city where they will be released. As you know, it is too late this year for them to be released. Having members of the public at the meeting will certainly help to gain support from the rest of the Council for Councillor Chiarelli's Motion. This is particularly important as we have just received photographs of the marvellous facility that the swans in Stratford, Ontario enjoy. As you can see for yourself, Stratford residents have every right to be offended by our City staff's claim that the facility in Ottawa "is the envy of other jurisdictions"! View photos at: http://www.wildlifeontario.ca/images/royalswans-stratford.html There has been extensive media coverage about the Royal Swans. Most recently, Global-TV carried the story on its National News which, rightfully, is giving Ottawa a black eye across Canada with respect to the treatment of these magnificent birds. But, it is our letters and show of support at the Council meeting that can make the difference for the Swans. We apologize, in advance, if you have already received this request. We are trying to muster as much support for the Swans as possible. Sincerely, The Ottawa Royal Swan Coalition City of Ottawa location: 110 Laurier Avenue West The Council Chambers are immediately inside the Lisgar Street entrance on the Main Floor.
