      Ontario stands out as the worst jurisdiction in Canada when it comes
to ensuring the proper care of captive wildlife.
            The province makes it far too easy for residents to collect wild
animals in small cages and advertise themselves as a zoo. With few
regulations in place, it is not surprising that there are more roadside zoos
in Ontario than any other jurisdiction in the country. More than 40 zoos are
known to exist and the majority of these are substandard.

            ?In Ontario, you need a license to keep native animals such as
bears and wolves in a cage and there are few conditions attached,? said
Tkachyk.  ?There are no rules for keeping exotic animals which represent 2/3
of all the zoo animals in Ontario. One doesn?t even need a license to keep a
hippo in their backyard.?

            There are no public health and safety standards stipulating how
dangerous animals should be contained in order to safeguard visitors, staff
and the community.  Shockingly, it is not hard to find tigers behind flimsy,
low fences that allow for an easy escape.
            ?This is a serious concern as a number of people have been
injured and a few even killed in Ontario by captive wildlife,? said Tkachyk.
Since June 2005, six captive wildlife escapes were reported in the media in
Ontario.

            Roadside zoos typically house animals in poor, barren
conditions. Most lack trained professional animal care staff and the
financial resources necessary to ensure adequate care and housing. Roadside
zoos typically consist of a range of small, ramshackle cages that offer
little more than a water bowl, food bowl and a shelter box to sleep in.
Deprived of opportunities to behave naturally, animals in these zoos often
become bored and frustrated and exhibit signs of psychological disturbance,
including stereotypic behaviours. Many of the practices, some of them quite
cruel, which seem to be the norm in roadside zoos, would not be tolerated in
professionally-accredited zoos.

            The World Society for the Protection of Animals is asking the
Ontario government to implement regulations which would force all zoos to
operate at a professional standard or be closed.

In general I am opposed to zoos due to keeping animals in captivity.  However, some people have said that zoos help animals through conservation efforts, etc  
 
I am especially interested in learning more about the Toronto Zoo.  I was on their website looking around but wondered if anyone has opinions on this zoo.

Hi Tracy,
   
  Last time I visited the Toronto Zoo I decided that it would indeed be my last time. I wasn't impressed. I found many of the enclosures way too small, especially the one for the lions who were pacing, they only had a few rocks when they would need a huge amount of space to run around on. 
   
  I hate zoos as well except for those that house animals that have been rescued and then I believe that if they have the proper facilities, they can also serve as a way to educate people and especially children and help them grow in their love of animals.

    Hope everyone is having a nice summer...

    Unfortunately August means the annual return of the Shrine Circus where elephants, horses and possibly other animals (it doesn't look like any large cats based on the site http://www.shrine-circus.com/ ) will be performing tricks under confining, unatural and miserable conditions and we've all heard the horror stories of what goes on behind the scenes..

    We would VERY MUCH like to do a media event to raise as much awareness in the community as possible about cruel exotic animal acts that teach children absolutely nothing except disrespect for animals. And while giving out leaflets to circus goers 'may' convince a few people not to return, it doesn't really compare to a broadcast or newspaper article about the cruelty issues of animal circuses.

    So...we'd like to do some STREET THEATRE but this will not be possibly without peoples' active support and participation as I can no longer cover costs out of my own pocket. So far only half of the people from the last meeting have gotten back to me so unless we can find more volunteers, we will likely have to go with a standard (less effective) protest.

    Here is the list for jobs we need your help with!

    - people to commit to come to the protest THURSDAY AUGUST 10TH from 6:15PM to 7:30PM outside the St. Laurent Shopping Centre parking lot.

    - someone to wear an elephant costume and act like a frightened elephant

    - someone to wear a Shriner costume and lead the elephant around against its' will or possibly bullhook the elephant.

    - people to commit to contribute to the cost of the following- elephant costume, shriner costume including maroon suit, glasses, white wig, 'fatsuit' or body suit to be stuffed with pillows, hat, glasses. I would attempt to find as much as I could at Goodwill but the approximate costs would still be around  80$ as the elephant costume rental is from a costume shop. So we'd need at least 12 people contributing about $7 each.

    If you can help with any or a few or the above please let me know as soon as possible. Only with your participation can we make circus animal slavery a thing of the past!

Please don't take this the wrong way.. but with 40000 Canadians in Lebanon, and only 6700 evacuated (last numbers?) I would hate to see everyone bring their pets, and (if it would mean) leave esp. children behind. But same for taking out all the Canadians and leaving all the peaceful lebanese, it's just an awful horrible situation. It would be great if they could evacuate everyone and their pets.... everyone who didn't want to fight. 

We should use that info on Stephen for the anti-dog/cat fur trade protests though.

     At this very moment, brave men and women are risking their lives to help feed and transport hundreds of dogs and cats trapped in animal shelters being destroyed by the bombing in Lebanon. 



      Three separate shelters run by Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (BETA) are in constant danger.   Many of the dogs are visibly suffering due to the ongoing noise and near destruction.



      BETA and the animals in its care urgently need your help.  IFAW is preparing up to a $20,000 financial grant to help transport the animals to safety, pay for food, medication and shelter.
