From ottawa.animal.advocates at rogers.com Sun Jun 4 17:39:37 2006 From: ottawa.animal.advocates at rogers.com (ottawa animal advocates) Date: Sun, 4 Jun 2006 13:39:37 -0400 Subject: [4animals] General Meeting June 14th or 15th Message-ID: <003101c687fd$d9f7a900$da5f8b48@Victoria> Ribfest Demo tentative /Meeting being planned Unfortunately it looks like we won't be trying for a media event at the upcoming Ribfest as the potential media spokeperson is unavailable for the duration of the Festival. On the flip-side, the same individual will be donating that weekend to build cages and enclosures for a new wildlife care centre near Algonquin Park! I am a bit skeptical as to the value a smaller demo at ribfest as we would likely be dealing with highly excited, die-hard carnivores and we don't want to waste materials that cost money to print. So I am more inclined to perhaps plan a factory farming leafletting session (and/or demo) at a later date outside Loblaws or another location where people might be more open to receiving information. However, this aswell as other AR issues and ideas could be further discussed at an upcoming meeting which will now be offered for the dates of either: > WEDNESDAY JUNE 14TH or > THURSDAY JUNE 15TH (since there is no longer a time limit to plan for a media event at Ribfest) We have not held a meeting in some time so a few things in particular that we would be very happy to receive feedback on include: - The pros and cons of 'positive' demonstration ideas as well as more confrontational demonstration ideas. - Should we add other elements to a factory farming demo such as health risks of eating meat and environmental consequences of eating meat like the link to the destruction of the rainforest and the massive fossil fuel and water waste to run the factory farms to try to strengthen the justification for not eating meat- or just stick to animal rights/cruelty related reasons? - ideas for what to have on signs at factory farming/pro-veg demonstrations> ideas geared to 'your average meater". - creative ideas to share on ways to draw media to factory farming, fur and/or other demonstrations eg. a 'human meat tray', street theatre, props etc.. - The possibility of setting up TV's and DVD players downtown to play MEET YOUR MEAT and/or other videos in the evening- for better visibility (They're doing it in Toronto!) - other animal rights related issues people are interested in pursuing or discussing. If you are interested, could you please let me know asap which date is better for you or if both dates are ok so that I can give out as much notice as possible? It might be good to tentatively mark the date you are available on your calendar in case that evening is chosen based on most people's availability. So please feel free to drop by for a snack, desert or coffee..Your contribution/ideas just might result in a highly effective upcoming action for the animals! I will provide a transcript of the ideas or tentative plans discussed for those who showed or still have an interest in planning but can't make it out that night. Anyone who hasn't confirmed please feel free to come out! ...the number one goal of the meeting is always to come up with ways to help reduce animal suffering to the best of our ability...(I have room for 2 in my car if you live in the central or south/west end and need a lift home so please let me know if you're interested). Some possible discussion topics include: - factory farming, pro-veg issues, animal testing issues, local issues, August Shriner's Circus Protest and perhaps anything other than fur which could be reserved for a meeting date a little closer to the next fur season. -The pros and cons of more 'positive' or 'promotional' demonstration ideas as opposed to more confrontational demonstration ideas. - Should we add other elements to anti-factory farming demos such as health risks of eating meat and environmental consequences of eating meat eg. the link to rainforest destruction and the fossil fuel and water waste involved in running the factory farms to try to strengthen the justification for not eating meat- or just stick to animal rights/cruelty related reasons? - ideas for signs at factory farming/pro-veg events - creative ideas on how to draw media to factory farming demonstrations eg. a 'human meat tray', street theatre, a vegan/vegetarian potluck or other ideas promoting a cruelty-free lifestyle.. - The possibility of setting up TV's/DVD players downtown to play 'MEET YOUR MEAT' and/or other videos in the evening- for better visibility (They're doing it in Toronto!) Message-ID: <017801c68f5a$2a50e110$6400a8c0@v> Hey guys, I hate asking people for money for anything, but this is kind of a special case. I found a couple of baby raccoons that had fallen into our building's trashcans and were unable to get out. They were a mess... we cleaned them up and then when it wasn't cold and raining, we left them outside for the mother to hopefully come and pick them up. It seems after a couple nights that the mother is not coming. They disappear during the day to sleep, and they come back for food. Technically they are too young to be completely on their own and I would like to see them go to the Rideau Wildlife Centre, but currently they are at maximum capacity unless they were able to expand... which means donations!!! It is quite a lot of money or I'd try and spring for it all myself..... so that is also why I'm asking if you could maybe let me know if you were able to donate, how much just so that I know how much short we are. Alternatively I suppose I could ask them how much has come in... but I haven't even told them I'm doing this yet. Secondly can you please let them know along with your donation that this is for the Glebe raccoons (and/or you could mention my name)? rideauwildlife at ripnet.com or 613-258-9480 (is an answering machine only). Thirdly, if you are sending a cheque... could you email them ahead of time and let them know to expect it. There is a newsletter here: http://www.rideauwildlife.org/RVWSNewsletter.pdf with donation info at the bottom. They have charitable status, so you get a receipt if you donate $10.00 or more. The main website is here: http://www.rideauwildlife.org You can donate by credit card here by clicking on the "Canada Helps" logo on the front page. While part of the money goes toward the particular animals, part of it goes toward an enclosure that can be used for many years ahead. Raccoons are a rabies-vector species and so by law must receive special care and can't be fostered out. They also commonly carry a kind of worm that also requires they get special attention. The best chance they have is at the Wildlife Sanctuary, NOT here. However even if it doesn't work out, you can know the money is going to a good place.... a vital resource you may require if you happen to be the next one to come across an animal in need. If you, like me, have been MEANING to donate, now is the time! Also if you are thinking about donating, please do not wait too long as the raccoons need it now. Anyway, attached are a couple pictures of them cleaned up. Please pass this on to anyone you think might like to help.... or let me know if you have any ideas! Thanks! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The members of People for the Ethical Treatment Animals secretly won an eBay auction offering dinner with the star. They spent several minutes asking a stunned Knowles why she wore fur and why it was used by her fashion label. Knowles remained silent as her mother and sister defended her, before the activists were asked to leave. A video of the meeting at the upmarket Nobu restaurant was made by the campaigners and obtained by the American website TMZ.com. During the meal, they also tried to use a portable DVD player to show Knowles footage of animals being killed for their fur. The opportunity to eat with the singer was offered by the VH1 music channel, as part of an auction which would benefit its Save the Music Foundation. A spokesman for Knowles said the 24-year-old had no comment to make about the meeting. ------------------------------------------ From edandrea at magma.ca Sun Jun 18 15:52:17 2006 From: edandrea at magma.ca (Edelweiss D'Andrea) Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2006 11:52:17 -0400 Subject: [4animals] Media complicity In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Victoria, Len, Louise and a few others met to discuss possible animal rights events in the future. Victoria would like to get media coverage, but it's difficult. Here's an article about big business' control of what gets into the media. It's about the Iraq war, but the same applies to animal rights issues. I would like to see newspapers and TV showing stories about real and important issues, but how can we encourage it? Enjoy the article. Edelweiss ---------------------------- Access of Evil Amy Goodman If President Bush had stood on the steps of the White House with a megaphone when he set out to sell the Iraq War, he might have convinced a few people about the imminent threat posed by Saddam Hussein. But he had something far more powerful that convinced far more people: He had a compliant press corps ready to amplify his lies. This was the same press corps that investigated and reported for years on President Clinton's lying about an extramarital affair. The difference here was that President Bush's lies take lives. In order to be able to get that all-important leak from a named or, better yet, unnamed "senior official," reporters trade truth for access. This is the "access of evil," when reporters forgo the tough questions out of fear of being passed over. And then there is the embedding process. Journalists embedded with US troops in Iraq bring us only one perspective. How about balancing the troops' perspective with reporters embedded in Iraqi hospitals, or in the peace movement around the world? Former Pentagon spokesperson Victoria Clarke proclaimed the embedding process a spectacular success. For the Pentagon, it was. More powerful than any bomb or missile, the Pentagon deployed the media. During the Persian Gulf War, General Electric owned NBC (it still does). A major nuclear weapons manufacturer--which made parts for many of the weapons in the Gulf War--owned a major television network. Is it any surprise that what we saw on television looked like a military hardware show? According to the New York Times, CBS executives "offered advertisers assurances that the war specials could be tailored to provide better lead-ins to commercials. One way would be to insert the commercials after segments that were specially produced with upbeat images or messages about the war." After the Gulf War, Pentagon spokesperson Pete Williams jumped ship, but he was hardly crossing enemy lines. He became a correspondent for NBC. Just over a decade later, another Pentagon spokesperson, Victoria Clarke, gave up her position to work as a CNN commentator. During the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, MSNBC, NBC and CNN--not only Fox--called their coverage Operation Iraqi Freedom. We expect the Pentagon to research the most effective propagandistic name to call its operation. But the media's adoption of Pentagon nomenclature raises the question: If this were state media, how would it be any different? While the big players in the National Entertainment State deserve much of the blame, other major news outlets have truly outdone themselves in their total affront to the role that an independent media should play in a democracy. The New York Times and its former national security reporter Judith Miller were critical to the successful promulgation of the WMD lie, with repeated front-page, above-the-fold articles pumping the false stories about aluminum tubes and buried weapons caches, to name a few, all reliant on unnamed sources. Sinclair Broadcast Group, which controls close to sixty TV stations, acts like a junior version of Fox News, with right-wing biases in its lackluster coverage. Sinclair refused to broadcast an ABC Nightline segment on which the names of killed US servicemen and -women were read, continuing the Bush Administration campaign to deny to the American public bad news about the War on Terror. Sinclair also broadcast with much fanfare a Swift Boat Veterans-inspired smear piece against John Kerry at a critical moment in the 2004 presidential race. And then there's the Clear Channeling of America. Enabled by the Clinton/Gore-backed 1996 Telecommunications Act, the Bush-connected Clear Channel Communications, which began with a dozen radio stations, ballooned into a 1,200-plus-station radio network. According to South Carolina's 2002 Radio Personality of the Year, who believes she was fired for her antiwar beliefs, Clear Channel led prowar rallies, forbade certain songs from being played and silenced critics. In 1997 the late George Gerbner, former dean of the University of Pennsylvania Annenberg School of Communication, described the media as being "driven not by the creative people who have something to tell, but by global conglomerates that have something to sell." And almost ten years later, it still rings true. We need an independent media. Sunday, July 16th is National Ice Cream Day - the perfect opportunity to show consumers the delights of dairy-free ice cream. Viva! is teaming up with Soy Delicious ? producers of mouth-watering flavors such as Mocha Almond Fudge, Cookies & Cream, and Mango Raspberry ? and we need your help to show everyone how yummy these cruelty-free desserts are! Can you spare a couple of hours on National Ice Cream Day to join in with a fun, national event? Organize a free ice cream give-away in your area and persuade the public to dump dairy and sample soy instead! According to the International Ice Cream Association, about 9% of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used for ice cream, in its words: "contributing significantly to the economic well-being of the nation's dairy industry." Dairy cows' lives are short, exhausting, and filled with discomfort and distress. Forced to produce a calf every year in order to keep up milk production, the babies are torn away, sometimes when only a few hours old, so that the milk meant for them can be bottled up for humans. Mother cows will bellow for days at the loss of their young. Relentless milking makes them tired, always hungry, and susceptible to mastitis, which can cause pus to weep from their infected teats. Their babies' future is also bleak. Male calves will likely end up in veal crates, chained by the neck to prevent movement and slaughtered at around 6 months of age for their pale flesh. Female calves will be forced into a life of misery producing milk for humans. Please get in touch now if you want to be part of this fun promotion by organizing a free ice cream give-away in your area. Soy Delicious will provide you with coupons to purchase tubs of ice cream to give away, and we can advise you on how to make your event a real success with local media coverage. We look forward to hearing from you soon! Yours for the animals, Claudia Tarry Campaigns Director more ideas: http://www.vivausa.org/campaigns/dairy/servingicecream.html info at viva.org __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
