Subject: [wildlifeontario] Letter submitted to Ottawa Citizen today in defense of Bardot's animal welfare work

As I suspected would happen, a couple of letters were published today regarding why doesn't Bardot complain about bull fighting and abbatoirs, etc. so I sent this letter in response.

Re: "Bardot's outrage is selective" and "Abattoir Realities"

Brigitte Bardot cares and campaigns for animals worldwide not only seal pups

Perhaps to most Canadians Brigitte Bardot is only famous for bringing attention to the killing of Canadian seal pups. However, lesser known but equally important is that Bardot, along with her Brigitte Bardot Foundation, is well respected internationally and since 1986 has been campaigning vigorously on numerous animal welfare issues around the world including bull fighting in France and Spain. In 1962, well before she drew worldwide attention to the slaughter of Canadian baby seals, Brigitte Bardot was the first public figure to denounce the cruel methods of killing used in slaughterhouses in France. This led to the introduction of more humane methods.

Her Foundation also works directly in the field providing such services as animal rescues, and cat and dog sterilization campaigns, For example, in 1998, the Foundation set up a mobile veterinary clinic and currently runs a large campaign for the sterilization of stray dogs in Eastern Europe.

The Foundation also created a sanctuary for former "Dancing Bears" in Bulgaria-bears that had been trained to so call "dance" by having the soles of their feet repeatedly burned. In 2002 the Foundation also won the battle against the "dancing" bear tradition in Bulgaria as the Bulgarian Parliament passed a law that prohibits anyone to hunt, sell, buy or exhibit a brown bear in front of a paying audience.

Bardot is not selective in her outrage against animal abuse. In fact, Brigitte Bardot is one of the world's leading animal welfare activists and I am grateful that she took the time to visit Canada to once again to help shine the spotlight on Canada's cruel and disgraceful baby seal slaughter.

Sincerely,

L. Steele
Ottawa
