This is the same day as the Great Glebe Garage sale, so we are expecting to reach many people. We are protesting KFC's reluctance to support the more humane rearing and slaughter methods that other major fast food chains have. KFCs decision not to take even the most minimal steps to improve the conditions of its chickens typifies the modern speciesist mindset that sees animals as nothing more than machines for turning low cost feed into high cost meat. The demonstration is to inform people of the abuses that KFC knowingly supports some of the worst abuses in the meat industry in order to provide them with the cheapest possible chicken flesh. We hope to create a KFC boycott or, at best, promote the complete abstention of all products produced through the cruel abuse and exploitation of animals. You can read more about KFCs abuses at www.KentuckyFriedCruelty.com. The theme of the protest is "Kick The Bucket". We will have materials for distribution and posters to wave, so at the very least all you have to do is show up - and bring as many people as you like! However, we will welcome your own creativity, should you choose to make a poster. I have forwarded your email to those concerned with the protest, so that you will receive all email updates. Thanks for caring! I hope to see you out. I have obtained a pair of crutches to go along with the chicken costume. I also have the permit secured through the City, and the police are also aware of the demo. The demo pack from PETA should be arriving this week, so we will have our ready-made signs, etc, and I have a couple of letter-sized photos (one of a baby chick's beak being cut off, one of several dead chickens hanging at the slaughterhouse) to tape/glue onto the more plain-looking signs. I have given a few of the demo announcements out in my community, but am not sure if they will get posted - they had to get approved first, and of course everywhere I went, the person in charge of that was not present. I hope other people are having more luck with that. The media information is being put together, and we have sent an announcement to the "Metro" paper, which gets distributed all over the city for free. The only thing we did not end up discussing at the Green Door the other day was slogans to shout out - I have some ideas after doing the demo with PETA in Toronto, but I am sure you guys have some good stuff too - maybe something to go along with the Kick the Bucket theme. Does anyone have a mega-phone? That can really get people's attention if we want to. If I have left anything out, or if anyone has some other ideas that will make the demo even better, please let me know. Thanks! Message-ID: <001d01c67890$f0c05c80$da5f8b48@Victoria> URGENT!! This was a last minute thing for PETA aswell, hence the short notice... To summarize, the Prime Minister of Australia will be in town and at various events on these two days. The issue is that 'disposable' Australian sheep that are too old to produce wool are being shipped by boat to Middle Eastern countries like Egypt, Kuwait, Jordan etc. The animals are usually already old and then exposed to weeks of travel with no food or water and a large number of them arrive dead at the destination. The unlucky ones that are barely alive are essentially dragged off the ships and as undercover footage has shown and 'processed' in horrific ways while still concious. Australia ALREADY has the facilities to 'process' the sheep in a presumably 'slightly' more humane way and mainly this would avoid the torture of the travel and the aftermath in these countries. PETA will either be flying a rep in or locating someone from Montreal to speak to media about the issue but a 'Sheep' is needed to trail and presumably embarass the P.M on his roundabouts.I was also assured that the media rep and the costume wearer would not enter any buildings without authority and the costumes offer FULL body coverage. I am prepared to fill in one of these time slots, but they really need help with the others!! Please get back to me asap if you can help. Volunteers are URGENTLY needed for the following time slots: Thursday > 7:30am- before and after he adresses the House of Commons- to approximately 10:30am (3 hrs) involves hanging around the Parliament buildings. Friday > 7:30am- before and during a 'ceremony' at the War Memorial by the Chateau Laurier for about two hours involves hanging around the War memorial monument. Friday > 11:30am-2pm as he lunches near Bank and Queen street (approx 2.5 hours) involves hanging around the restaurant. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... That always helps to get the point across and I think it might make things appear more serious than having the chicken kicking a bucket around. 'Kick the Bucket' is great for signs though I think. I was just wondering if someone was taking care of asking PETA to post the demo to the Ottawa mailing list and also if there will be enough KFC leaflets because I don't have that many left after all. Also, if there are lots of people from the garage sale, I guess we'd need alot of them. Also, Michele, you suggested at the meeting about encouraging people to call the Canadian CEO for KFC. I'm not sure if calling his home would be preferable to his office because they would be more likely to suspect activists and I think it might be better for us to come across as (former) customers. Also for the same reason maybe we could all commit to calling once a week for the next two weeks as though we had just heard about KFC's cruelty and dishonesty to the public...I still think it's a really good idea. -Victoria -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I decided not to make the oversized KFC bucket, since the consensus seems to be that the Chicken kicking the big bucket is a silly idea. :( Cheers, Kyle From mta at magma.ca Thu May 25 11:20:37 2006 From: mta at magma.ca (Michele) Date: Thu, 25 May 2006 07:20:37 -0400 Subject: [4animals] Re: KFC Demo In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <7.0.1.0.0.20060525071610.01ab9cb0@magma.ca> That is probably a good idea about congregating somewhere else - Diana is going to drop me off with all the supplies, including the crutches and DVD player, so I will be waiting somewhere until she finds a place to park, and it does have the potential to be uncomfortable :) It would have to be somewhere close enough though that we didn't have to lug things too far. KFC are cruel to their chickens, they make people overweight with their saturated-fat-intensive food, and they deforest the Amazonian rainforest, leading to the loss of rick rainforest biodiversity and the displacement of local communities who depend on the forest for their livelihoods. I attended a lecture last night by David Suzuki, who described how he worked with native people fro the Brazilian rainforest, who are fighting valiantly, generation after generation, to get permanent protection for their land. The North American native people see that the Brazilian indigenous people are fighting the same fight their ancestors did hundreds of years ago, and they give generously (many native people are poor) and travel to Brazil to support their demonstrations against the Brazilian government. I hope you don't mind my bringing information about rainforest deforestation. It's another way to get people to stop buying KFC. I think others may have taken some too... As for the official report, unfortunately there was no media coverage despite faxing out media releases to the 2 main papers and 2 local tv stations, as well as about 4 local radio stations. However, I would estimate that we gave out about 500 leaflets (I think I had about 300, and there were at least 2 others with a stack of leaflets each), so if you consider that some groups of 2-4 people took just one flyer for the group, and if you consider the large number of people who didn't take a leaflet but cheered as they drove by, I would say the message got out to a very LARGE audience. I heard a lot of positive feedback from passers by, and even though there were some negative comments, I don't think that was the sentiment of the majority. Even though those people seemed to have the loudest voices, I don't think that should be how we measure our success at having gotten the message across. There will always be people who will stick to their opinions no matter how convincing we try to be - I don't think it's worth the time and effort talking to those groups of people, and I would just ignore the dumb comments made by the small number of uninformed and ignorant people (I would especially ignore Mr. "I used to work there" and "get your facts straight" guy!!!) I think we should be proud of what we accomplished. I want to thank everyone who helped out, no matter how big or small the task. It was all needed to pull this off, and I just appreciate everything you all did. Thanks to Kyle for being brave with the mega-phone - you did a fantastic job! Thank you to Frank for literally sweating it out in the chicken costume - you really got the point across. Thanks to everyone who put up posters in advance, made and/or held signs, handed out leaflets, shouted out some chants, or talked to those who wanted to hear more! I look forward to future demonstrations with you! Unless someone would like to e-mail me with other ideas for a venue (feel free) the annual Sparks Street Mall International rib cook-off looks like a good bet. The date for this festival is earlier than last year: >> June 21st to 25th, so unfortunately we would not have too much time to prepare but I think it's possible to still put something together. Some early possible ideas for the demo include: * 'Characters' representing the cruelty of meat eg. DEVIL (we already have a costume), The GRIM REAPER for meat related diseases in humans and a 'sick planet earth' for destruction of the rainforest and other enviromental consequences related to factory farming/ meat consumption. (perhaps a little too involved with the time limits..) * " LETTUCE LADIES AND GUYS" if anyone is willing! (this might be our only close bet for media with factory farming being quite challenging to get coverage for.) * A nearly nude person wrapped in cellophane in a giant 'styrofoam' plate with a grocery store type label entitled 'FLESH'... We are open to other ideas aswell perhaps involving pigs... Reasonable contributions to the cost of supplies/materials could be discussed at a meeting. If you are interested in collaborating on and joining a ribfest demo, please let me know as soon as possible based on the following options, which meeting date to would work for you (it would be great to also indicate if both would work for you...) and we can plan it based on most peoples' availablility. The location would be the Green Door as it seems to be a good meeting place. Option 1) Wednesday June 7th, 7:30pm Option 2) Thursday June 8th, 7:30pm This would likely be the only demo of the summer planned by OAA apart from a possible Shrine Circus protest in August.
