Buying second hand leather work boots is a good idea. Part of the "reduce, reuse, recycle" philosophy...

One difficulty I have always had with some vegan shoes is that they are made from plastic, which incorporates oil and chemicals. and oil being a finite resource....

i have a few other ideas if this one proves too difficult: (all of which are not ideal but perhaps more realistic)
  - buy some used leather work boots, that way you're extending the use of something already in circulation
- buy leather ones but make up for it some way. the world is far from imperfect, for example i have a car which is very bad ecologically. the idea is to improve the world and leave a small footprint. ideas to make up:
  * get two friends to buy vegan shoes instead of meat based.
  * donate some money to an organization promoting vegan materials
  * this one would well make up for it if it works: buy the leathers, but over the next month or two find a place that make the ones you want (vegan). put up posters and get the normal supply stores to carry those shoes. if successful you'll likely get dozens or more people to buy the vegan ones. a place liek mec might be interested in carrying that kind of boot although a "workman" boot place would be better.
  * call up the place in england such as http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/ishop/877/shopscr29.html and ask them if they know who the rep in canada is. there's likely some shop with it. by the way can't stuff be shipped like in less than 5 days from england ? might have to purolator it but it'd get here (with some risk).
